PlantFile’s Author
Peter Kirkland is a professional horticulturist with over 20 years experience in all facets of the industry. While running his own landscaping business in Sydney, he became increasingly frustrated with the lack of one easy to use plant information source. Peter wanted to incorporate computers into his own business and saw the need for a database which could search and select plants on key criteria and be used as a marketing tool for client proposals and presentations.
He began developing PlantFile in his spare time over 15 years ago specifically targeting professional landscapers, horticulture students and avid home gardeners. PlantFile was first introduced in 2000 with just 500 plants but soon grew to over 2400 plant species with over 5000 cultivars.
Horticulture students have always been big fans of PlantFile since it incorporates their plant study list and makes class assignments easier. PlantFile Online, an online student version of the product has been introduced in both the New South Wales and Queensland horticultural education system as a core study foundation.
Recently, PlantFile has been introduced overseas to the U.S. and New Zealand to both the professional and student segments of the horticulture industry.
